San Augustine

Our "hopeful" plan was to go straight to Cape Canaveral and we thought we could do it.  The problem was that we ran into a bit of the Gulf Stream (we think), 'cause our speed went from 7.5mph to about 4mph.  We angled back toward land, and after a few hours, our speed began to increase.  This course had us going directly to Jacksonville/San Augustine, so we went with it.  Another factor that put Cape Canaveral out of reach is that there was no wind to speak of - so no sailing (or motor sailing for that matter).  Our fuel burn was up around 0.75g/h, which meant Cape Canaveral was going to be really tight.

Ben and Jeannette really wanted to go to San Augustine anyway, so we made for that destination.  We actually got there too quickly and ended up sitting off-shore for a few hours.  The San Augustine inlet has some "quirks", so all the local knowledge advised to not try it in the dark.  After we came in at 7am, we picked up a $20 town mooring ball and went into the town marina for showers and breakfast.  What a great facility!!!!  Clean restrooms (best we've seen), big laundry, ship's store, boater's lounge, and all of it right in the middle of beautiful San Augustine!

We went for a tour of the old fort (a must see!!!), then walked around through the shops.  We are definitely going to drive back over here when we have time for more siteseeing.  Wonderful place.

After topping off the fuel tanks, water tanks, pump out, ice, etc., we are now motoring down the ICW, making for Daytona Beach.  We are going to take it easy for a few days to recover from our off-shore run.  We are thinking our next big jump will be from Ft Pierce to Miami, and then on to the Keys!
